In 2023, The European Digital Reading Lab joined the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Publishers Compact and our team started thinking about how to include those guidelines in our works.

We proudly present our first analysis and report of that commitment, underscoring EDRLab’s dedication to creating a more inclusive, equitable, and sustainable digital publishing ecosystem. Our action is intrinsically implicating involvements in the following fields:

  • Quality Education (SDG 4) By advocating for open standards and developing inclusive digital content, our work aims to ensure that educational materials are easily distributed and accessible across a variety of platforms and to a wide range of audiences. This not only seeks to enrich the educational landscape but also to bolster the foundation for lifelong learning—a concept that is becoming increasingly crucial in today’s fast-evolving world.
  • Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure (SDG 9) EDRLab plays a pivotal role in the evolution of digital publishing through its ongoing efforts in developing cutting-edge technologies and establishing robust standards. Its commitment to fostering innovation within the industry is evident in the way it addresses the critical challenges faced by content producers, distributors, and consumers alike. One of the key aspects of our work is its emphasis on interoperability. By promoting technologies that can seamlessly communicate with one another, we ensures that digital content can be created, shared, and accessed across various platforms and devices. This interoperability not only enhances user experience but also allows creators to reach wider audiences without being restricted by technological barriers.
  • Reduced Inequalities (SDG 10) Accessibility stands as a fundamental pillar of EDRLab’s initiatives. The organization is unwavering in its commitment to ensuring that digital content is accessible to individuals with disabilities. By focusing on this mission, EDRLab is instrumental in bridging gaps in information and educational inequalities. This dedication to inclusive design not only benefits a broad spectrum of users but also fosters a more equitable and just digital landscape. Through innovative approaches and thoughtful implementation, EDRLab champions the belief that everyone, regardless of their abilities, should have equal access to the wealth of knowledge and resources available online.
  • Partnerships for the Goals (SDG 17) EDRLab understands that collaboration is essential for advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). To this end, the organization forges strategic partnerships with a diverse array of stakeholders, including governmental bodies, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and industry leaders. By working together, they aim to develop and promote open standards and accessible technologies that have far-reaching benefits. These collaborations not only facilitate collective action but also enhance knowledge sharing among partners, significantly amplifying the impact and effectiveness of EDRLab’s initiatives in driving positive change.

Our commitment to the SDGs reflects our core values of innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability. By aligning our efforts with these global goals, we aim to create a digital publishing ecosystem that benefits everyone, regardless of background or abilities.
